Henri Matisse Cut Outs at the National Gallery of Art (NGA) in Washington, D.C. When my daughter participated in the Museum Makers Seminar at the NGA in 2017, I accompanied her to the city each weekend and spent a lot of time in the East Buliding. One of my favorite rooms was the Matisse Cut Outs exhibit.

In 2020, I came across the Clover pattern by Cluck, Cluck, Sew and it reminded me of the Cut Outs so I thought I would make it using similar colors from the exhibit. I nicknamed this quilt the Matisse quilt.

This was the original pattern. My husband suggested that I put a narrow sashing through the “clovers”.

Luckily I hadn’t sewn the bigger blocks together so I was open to testing out the sashing idea. It really did make the pattern look like the Cut Outs.

I quilted this on my longarm machine using an edge to edge pattern called Easy Orange Peel from Urban Elementz.

The quilt is still on the frame but you can see a nice close up of the Easy Orange Peel quilting pattern.

I chose a large print for the backing - Navy and White Vines by Benartex Fabrics.

Instead of a straight edge binding, I scalloped the edges to represent the curvy shape of the Cut Outs.
