I was making a scrappy string quilt and had a couple of blocks that were out of alignment. I turned one into the background of a small hand stitching project.

I used a stock photo of a crow as a template to cut out the shape from a piece of black flannel.

I layered in the highlights and lowlights with scrappy pieces of fabric.

I embroidered stitches on the bird and hand quilted the background stripes.

I thought the background still need a little something extra so I added fabric circles. I marked the circles for stitching.

The finished product!

I wrapped the finished block on a canvas and added a blue border.
